I have wanted to start a book club for many years now, but I have hesitated only because I read at a fast and often erratic pace. Sometimes I can get through a 400+ page book in a week, other times I will take a whole month to read a novella. However, in this era where content travels at the speed of light, I’ve grown a deeper appreciation for slow consumption and allowing space for the work I consume to marinate.
Slow Reads will be a quarterly book club that allows readers to savor stories. We will start a new book together on the start on the first day of each quarter. Halfway through the quarter, we will gather in my subscriber chat to discuss the first half of the book, and we will have one final chat at the end of the quarter to discuss the last half of the book.
Discussion guides will be provided at the halfway point and at the end of the quarter, allowing readers to take in the first half autonomously and at their own pace.
Once we finish the book, I will publish a review of the book, featuring some of your thoughts and feedback from the chat, and the next book will be announced.
Sky Full of Elephants by Cebo Campbell is a speculative novel about a surreal America where all white people vanish, following ex-inmate and professor Charlie Brunton as he journeys with his estranged, biracial daughter Sidney across a transformed landscape to a new Black-led South, exploring themes of Black identity, systemic injustice, fatherhood, healing, and possibility in a world redefined without whiteness, blending Afrofuturism with magical realism.

For now, we will keep these in the chat rooms, but I would love to see where it goes and look into potentially hosting a virtual meetup.
If you have recommendations for future books to read, feel free to drop those in the comments.
Eventually, I would like to do an offshoot of this club for slowly consuming music and films together as well, but for now, we read!
Looking forward to connecting with you all in the chat!
With Love,

A sign because this has been on my TBR for a minute
Was introduced to this book October. Picked it half priced at Barnes and Nobles this month 👀👀
